“I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.” David wrote it on a night when he had every reason to stay awake. The end of the day is a good time to hand it back to God, finished or not.
These are prayers to say before bed: for peace, for protection through the night, for the worries that wake you up, and simple prayers to pray with children.
Short prayers for bedtime
Psalm 4:8
Lord, this day is done, and I give it back to You. Forgive me where I have failed, and thank You for every good thing You gave. I place my worries, and the people I love, into Your hands. I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. Watch over my home tonight, quiet my mind, and let me rest in You. Amen.

Psalm 91:1-16
Lord Most High, I dwell in Your shelter and rest in Your shadow. You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust. Cover me and my family with Your feathers, and hide us under Your wings. In the terror of the night I will not fear, for Your faithfulness is our shield. Command Your angels to guard us in all our ways. When I call to You, answer me, and be with me in trouble. Amen.
