Mark 4 records a sudden squall on the Sea of Galilee — a lake ringed by hills where storms still drop without warning. Seasoned fishermen, men who had worked this water all their lives, were bailing for their lives while Jesus slept on a cushion in the stern. Their question is the one we all ask: 'Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?' He answered the wind before he answered them: 'Peace, be still.' The Greek suggests a muzzle — the storm was not soothed but silenced. The disciples' fear of the storm became awe at the one in the boat. This prayer is for the moment your circumstances are louder than your faith, and you need to remember who is aboard.
