Grief & Loss

For the Brokenhearted

Psalm 34:18

Pray with me — for those whose hearts are broken. For families who lost too much. For mothers who weep. For fathers who cannot sleep. Lord, You are close to the brokenhearted. You hear every cry. Be near them now. Be their refuge. Hold them where words cannot reach. Blessed are those who mourn — they shall be comforted. Lord, comfort them. Amen.

The Scripture

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.”

— Psalm 34:18

About this verse

Psalm 34 is attributed to David from a season when he had just escaped a life-threatening ordeal, feigning madness before a foreign king to survive. Out of that relief comes a psalm cataloguing what God is like toward the suffering — verse 18 says plainly that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. This is echoed centuries later in Jesus' own words that those who mourn are blessed, because they will be comforted. Together they describe a God who does not stay distant from grief but moves toward it. This prayer is for interceding on behalf of someone else's loss — the ones grieving, exhausted, or up at night with sorrow that isn't your own to fix, only to hold before God.
