Lord, I don't know how to stop. I've held everything together so long I forgot I'm allowed to rest. Be my Shepherd tonight — make me lie down in Your green pastures, and keep watch while I sleep. I trust You to hold what I can't. Amen.

Psalm 23:2 opens David's most familiar psalm with an image drawn from his own years as a shepherd: sheep that are anxious, hungry, or harassed by pests will not lie down, no matter how green the pasture. It takes a shepherd's active care — clearing the field, driving off threats, calming the flock — before the sheep can finally rest. The verb is causative: the Shepherd *makes* them lie down, because rest rarely comes naturally to a creature that has been on guard. David, a man who spent seasons fleeing enemies and carrying the weight of a kingdom, describes God as the one who intervenes to produce the very rest we cannot manufacture for ourselves. This is a prayer for the exhausted person who has forgotten how to stop, spoken as permission to finally set the weight down and sleep.
