The first church gathered to pray: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” These prayers are written for the moments of church life: opening a service, receiving the offering, starting a Bible study, sending people out with a blessing.
Each one is short enough to read aloud from the front and is drawn from a passage you can read with it. Use them as they are, or let them get you started in your own words. For a whole prayer meeting, see the prayer points with Scriptures.
Lord God, we come into Your presence with thanksgiving. You are the Rock of our salvation and a great King above all gods. The depths of the earth, the mountain peaks and the sea are Yours, and so are we, for You are our Maker. As we sing, pray and open Your word today, quiet our hearts and turn them to You. We bow before You and worship You. Be glorified in all we do here. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Lord our God, Yours is the greatness and the power and the glory, and everything in heaven and on earth belongs to You. Who are we, that we should be able to give? Everything comes from You, and from Your own hand we give back to You. Thank You for every gift, and above all for Jesus. Receive these tithes and offerings, given willingly and with joy, and use them to make Christ known near and far. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
God of peace, You brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the eternal covenant. Now, as we leave this place, equip us with every good thing to do Your will. Go with us into our homes, our work and our neighborhoods this week. Accomplish in us what is pleasing in Your sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
Lord Jesus, Chief Shepherd, thank You for the pastors who watch over us. Help them shepherd Your flock willingly and eagerly, not out of compulsion or greed, and keep them humble examples, never lording it over us. When they are weary, renew them; when they are criticized, steady them. Guard their families, and give them true friends. Teach us to honor and encourage them. And when You appear, give them the crown of glory that will never fade away. Amen.
Lord Jesus, thank You for bringing us together around Your word. As we open the Scriptures, let Your word richly dwell within us. Open our minds to understand it and our hearts to receive it. Help us teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, humbly and kindly. Keep us honest about what we don’t understand and eager to obey what we do. Fill us with gratitude, and let this time shape how we live. In Your name, Amen.
Father, we bow our knees before You for our church. Out of the riches of Your glory, strengthen us with power through Your Spirit, so that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith. Root and ground us in love. Together with all the saints, help us grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and know this love that surpasses knowledge. Fill us with all Your fullness, and let that love reach our neighbors. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
