Thanksgiving Prayers

“Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His loving devotion endures forever.” The Psalms were Israel’s thanksgiving songs, sung at harvest and at the table, in good years and hard ones.

Here are prayers for Thanksgiving Day: a grace to say before the meal, a prayer of thanks for family, and a few psalms to pray when the house is quiet again.

Short prayers for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Prayer Before the Meal

Psalm 136:1

Lord, we give thanks to You, for You are good. Your loving devotion endures forever. You give food to every creature, and today You have filled this table. Thank You for this meal and the hands that made it, for each person here, and for those we miss today. Make us generous with all You have given. Amen.

Psalm 107:1

Lord, I give You thanks, for You are good, and Your loving devotion endures forever. Thank You for this year, for the meals You provided, for the people You gave me, and for the hard days You carried me through. You found me when I wandered and answered when I cried out. On this Thanksgiving Day, let my whole heart say so. Amen.

Thanksgiving Prayer for Family

Philippians 1:3

Father, I thank You every time I remember my family. Thank You for each one You have given me: the ones at my table today, the ones far away, and the ones I miss. You began a good work in us; carry it on. Where we are tired or at odds, bring us close. Keep us in Your love this year and always. Amen.

Give Thanks in Every Circumstance

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Father, I want to rejoice at all times, but some days I do not feel like it. Teach me to pray without ceasing, turning to You all through the day. And in every circumstance, the good and the hard, help me find a reason to thank You. Thank You for this day, for the people You have given me, and for Jesus. This is Your will for me, and I say yes. Amen.

Bless the LORD, O My Soul

Psalm 103:1-22

Lord, with all that is within me I bless Your holy name. I will not forget all Your kind deeds. You forgive all my iniquities and heal my diseases; You redeem my life from the Pit and crown me with loving devotion and compassion. You have removed my sins as far as the east is from the west. You know that I am dust, and You care for me like a father. Bless the LORD, O my soul! Amen.
