Matthew 11:28 comes in the middle of Jesus' ministry, spoken to a crowd worn down by the religious burdens of the day — the endless rules the teachers of the law piled on ordinary people, plus the everyday grind of poverty and labor under Roman rule. 'Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden' was an open invitation, not a private word for the already-devout. The image is of a yoke, the wooden frame that let an animal share its load with another — Jesus offers to carry the weight with you, not simply remove it from a distance. This prayer is for the moment exhaustion has become its own kind of weight, and you need somewhere to actually set it down.
