Opening Prayer for Bible Study

Colossians 3:16

Colossians 3:16 is from the letter Paul and Timothy wrote to the believers at Colossae, telling them to let the word of Christ live richly among them as they teach one another and sing to God.

Lord Jesus, thank You for bringing us together around Your word. As we open the Scriptures, let Your word richly dwell within us. Open our minds to understand it and our hearts to receive it. Help us teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, humbly and kindly. Keep us honest about what we don’t understand and eager to obey what we do. Fill us with gratitude, and let this time shape how we live. In Your name, Amen.

The Scripture

“Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.”

About this verse

Paul wrote to the believers at Colossae to keep them centered on Christ. In chapter 3 he describes what life together in Christ looks like: compassion, kindness, patience, forgiveness, and above all love, “which is the bond of perfect unity.” Then he says how a church grows in that life: “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” The word does not stay on the page. It makes its home among the people, and they help one another understand it and live it. That is what a Bible study is for. An opening prayer asks God to do this very thing: to let His word take root in each person and in the group, with wisdom, humility and thankfulness. This prayer is for a small group, Sunday school class or Bible study leader opening the time in prayer.
