Prayer Points for the Month of November
These prayer points for the month of November cover a crowded month: Veterans Day on the 11th, Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday, a Sunday many churches set aside to pray for persecuted Christians, Orphan Sunday in some churches, and the edge of Advent. For individuals, families, prayer meetings and churches, they pray for thankful hearts, the hungry and the lonely, believers suffering for Christ, veterans, orphans and the elderly, and hearts prepared for Christmas.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men. For He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.
Psalm 107:8-9 (BSB)
Pray one section a week through November, or one point a day. Pray the persecuted church section on your church’s day of prayer for the persecuted, and the gratitude section at the Thanksgiving table. In a group, after each prayer, let people name what they are thankful for and who needs help this season.
A thankful heart
1Thanks as a whole church
Our God, with David and the whole assembly we give You thanks and praise Your glorious name. As a church we thank You together for every gift this year: people saved, needs met, prayers answered and burdens shared.
Now therefore, our God, we give You thanks, and we praise Your glorious name.
1 Chronicles 29:13 (BSB) · Pray this verse →2Thanks for who He is
LORD, You are our God, and we give You thanks; You are our God, and we exalt You. You are good, and Your loving devotion endures forever. Let our thanks this month be about who You are, not only what we have.
You are my God, and I will give You thanks. You are my God, and I will exalt You. Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His loving devotion endures forever.
Psalm 118:28-29 (BSB)3Thanksgiving that honors God
God, the one who offers You thanks honors You. Turn our complaining into thanksgiving this month, in traffic, at work and around the table, and let our gratitude be an offering that honors You.
He who sacrifices a thank offering honors Me, and to him who rightly orders his way, I will show the salvation of God.”
Psalm 50:23 (BSB)4Content with what we have
Father, godliness with contentment is great gain. We brought nothing into the world, and we will carry nothing out. In a season of sales and wish lists, teach us to be content with food and clothing, and to want You more than more.
Of course, godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, so we cannot carry anything out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.
1 Timothy 6:6-8 (BSB)
The hungry and the lonely
5Serving Christ in the least
Lord Jesus, You said that feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, clothing the naked and visiting the sick and imprisoned is done for You. Open our eyes to You in the people we would rather pass by this season.
For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in, I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you visited Me.’
Matthew 25:35-36 (BSB)6Enriched to be generous
God who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food, increase the harvest of our righteousness. You enrich Your people so that they can be generous on every occasion. Let our giving this season produce thanksgiving to You.
Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your store of seed and will increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way to be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will produce thanksgiving to God.
2 Corinthians 9:10-11 (BSB)7Food banks and pantries
LORD, a generous man is blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor. Bless food banks, soup kitchens and church pantries in their busiest season, and send them volunteers, donations and joy in serving.
A generous man will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.
Proverbs 22:9 (BSB)8A seat for someone who cannot repay
Lord Jesus, You told us to invite people who cannot repay us. Show us who will be alone at Thanksgiving: a widow, an international student, a neighbor far from family. Give us courage to set a place for them.
But when you host a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind, and you will be blessed. Since they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
Luke 14:13-14 (BSB)
The persecuted church
9Not surprised by the fiery trial
Lord Jesus, many of our brothers and sisters face a fiery trial for Your name. Help them not to be surprised, but to rejoice that they share in Your sufferings. Strengthen them, and keep us from forgetting them.
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial that has come upon you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed at the revelation of His glory.
1 Peter 4:12-13 (BSB)10Songs at midnight in prison
Father, Paul and Silas prayed and sang hymns at midnight in prison while the other prisoners listened. Be near to Christians imprisoned for their faith tonight. Give them songs in the dark, and let their witness reach those around them.
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.
Acts 16:25 (BSB)11Chains that advance the gospel
God, Paul’s chains served to advance the gospel and made other believers bolder. Use the suffering of persecuted believers to spread Your word, and give the church in hard places courage to speak without fear.
Now I want you to know, brothers, that my circumstances have actually served to advance the gospel. As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. And most of the brothers, confident in the Lord by my chains, now dare more greatly to speak the word without fear.
Philippians 1:12-14 (BSB)12Nothing separates them from Your love
Lord, neither trouble nor persecution, hunger, danger nor sword can separate Your people from the love of Christ. Hold persecuted believers in that love, and in all these things make them more than conquerors through Him who loved them.
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For Your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
Romans 8:35-37 (BSB)
Veterans, orphans and the elderly
13The One who lifts our heads
LORD, You are a shield around us and the One who lifts our heads. On Veterans Day we thank You for those who served our country. Heal wounds of body and mind, lift the heads of those carrying hard memories, and draw them to You.
But You, O LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the One who lifts my head.
Psalm 3:3 (BSB)14Caring for orphans
God our Father, pure religion cares for orphans and widows in their distress. Bless foster and adoptive families, children waiting for homes, and the caseworkers who serve them. Show our church how to help, even those of us who cannot foster or adopt.
Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
James 1:27 (BSB)15Honoring the aged
LORD, You command Your people to rise in the presence of the elderly and honor the aged. Bless shut-ins, nursing home residents and older saints who will spend the holidays alone. Send us to visit, call and listen.
You are to rise in the presence of the elderly, honor the aged, and fear your God. I am the LORD.
Leviticus 19:32 (BSB)
Preparing for Advent
16Prepare the way
LORD, a voice called out to prepare the way for You in the wilderness. As Advent approaches, make a straight path in our hearts: clear away the clutter, the distractions and the sins that crowd out room for Jesus.
A voice of one calling: “Prepare the way for the LORD in the wilderness; make a straight highway for our God in the desert.
Isaiah 40:3 (BSB)17Waiting more than watchmen
Lord, our souls wait for You more than watchmen wait for the morning, and in Your word we put our hope. Teach us to wait well this Advent, with eager and expectant hearts that look to Christ.
I wait for the LORD; my soul does wait, and in His word I put my hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning—more than watchmen wait for the morning.
Psalm 130:5-6 (BSB) · Pray this verse →18Open the gates for the King
King of Glory, the gates are called to lift up their heads and the ancient doors to be lifted up, so that You may enter. Open the doors of our homes, our church and our hearts to welcome You this Christmas season, and take the first place in all of it.
Lift up your heads, O gates! Be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of Glory may enter!
Psalm 24:7 (BSB)19The desire of our souls
LORD, we wait for You as we walk in Your ways; Your name and renown are the desire of our souls. Before the shopping and the parties begin, set our hearts on You and on the Savior whose birth we will celebrate.
Yes, we wait for You, O LORD; we walk in the path of Your judgments. Your name and renown are the desire of our souls.
Isaiah 26:8 (BSB)
A closing prayer
Father, thank You for Your loving devotion and Your wonders to us; You satisfy the thirsty and fill the hungry with good things. Make us thankful and content, and use us to feed the hungry and welcome the lonely. Strengthen our persecuted brothers and sisters. Bless our veterans, the orphans and the elderly. As Advent draws near, prepare our hearts to welcome Jesus. In His name we pray, Amen.

Questions
When do churches pray for the persecuted church?
Many churches set aside a Sunday in November to pray for Christians who suffer for their faith, often using stories and prayer guides from ministries that serve them. Scripture asks believers to remember those in prison as if they were in prison with them (Hebrews 13:3), so it is right to keep praying for them all year.
What dates fall in November?
In the United States, Veterans Day is November 11 every year, and Thanksgiving Day is the fourth Thursday of November, a date Congress fixed in 1941. The first Sunday of Advent falls between November 27 and December 3, so Advent sometimes begins before November ends.
What Bible verses are good for November?
For gratitude: Psalm 107:8-9, Psalm 118:28-29, 1 Chronicles 29:13 and 1 Timothy 6:6-8. For the hungry: Matthew 25:35-36 and Luke 14:13-14. For the persecuted church: 1 Peter 4:12-13 and Romans 8:35-37. For Advent: Isaiah 40:3 and Psalm 130:5-6. Our Thanksgiving prayer points have more.
