Thanksgiving Prayer Points with Bible Verses
These thanksgiving prayer points are for churches, families and prayer groups who want to give thanks to God with Scripture: at a Thanksgiving service, around the table on Thanksgiving Day (the fourth Thursday of November, which falls on November 26 in 2026), or at any prayer meeting. They thank God for who He is, for salvation in Christ, for daily provision and family, for the church, and in hard seasons as well as good ones.
Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and bless His name. For the LORD is good, and His loving devotion endures forever; His faithfulness continues to all generations.
Psalm 100:4-5 (BSB)
For a church service, pray one section between songs or Scripture readings. At the family table, let each person read one verse aloud and pray its point, children included, then go around the table and name one specific gift from this year. On your own, pray one section a day through Thanksgiving week.

1 Timothy 4:4-5 (BSB)9The family You gave us
God, You settle the lonely in families. Thank You for the people around our table, by birth, marriage, adoption and friendship. Show us who is lonely this season, so that we can make room for them too.
God settles the lonely in families; He leads the prisoners out to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched land.
Psalm 68:6 (BSB)10The children in our lives
LORD, thank You for the children in our lives: our own, our grandchildren, and the kids in our church and neighborhood. They are a heritage from You. Help us thank You for them out loud, so that they hear it.

Philippians 1:3-5 (BSB)
Thanks in every circumstance
14Giving thanks in every circumstance

Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 (BSB)15Though the fields produce no food
God of our salvation, some of us come to this table after a year of loss: a job, a diagnosis, an empty chair. Even when the fields produce no food, help us rejoice in You, because You are still ours.
Though the fig tree does not bud and no fruit is on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though the sheep are cut off from the fold and no cattle are in the stalls, yet I will exult in the LORD; I will rejoice in the God of my salvation!

Psalm 30:11-12 (BSB)
A thankful, generous life
18Praise that turns into sharing
Lord Jesus, through You we offer God a sacrifice of praise. Let our thanks also become sharing: a seat at our table, a meal for a neighbor, a gift to someone in need this season.
Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise, the fruit of lips that confess His name. And do not neglect to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.
Hebrews 13:15-16 (BSB)19Thankful in everything we do

Colossians 3:17 (BSB)20Thanks for our country and its leaders
God, as You tell us, we give thanks for everyone, including our President and all in authority. Thank You for the freedom to worship You in this country, and give our leaders wisdom, so that we may live peaceful and godly lives.
First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for everyone— for kings and all those in authority—so that we may lead tranquil and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity.
1 Timothy 2:1-2 (BSB)
A closing prayer
Father, we give You thanks, for You are good, and Your loving devotion endures forever. Thank You for Jesus, Your indescribable gift, for every meal and every person You have given us, and for carrying us through this year. Make us thankful in every circumstance and generous with all You have entrusted to us, so that our lives keep saying thank You long after this day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Questions
What Bible verses are good for Thanksgiving?
Psalm 100:4-5, Psalm 107:1, 1 Chronicles 16:34, Psalm 136:1, 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Colossians 3:17, 2 Corinthians 9:15 and James 1:17 are among the most read. Psalm 100 is headed “A Psalm of thanksgiving,” and all 26 verses of Psalm 136 end with the same line: “His loving devotion endures forever.”
How do you lead a Thanksgiving prayer at church or at the table?
Keep it short and concrete. Read one verse, such as Psalm 100:4, thank God for who He is, then for specific gifts: salvation in Christ, provision, people. Remember those who are hurting, hungry or alone, and close in Jesus’ name. At the table, inviting each person to name one thing they are thankful for lets everyone take part, including children.
Why do Christians pray at Thanksgiving?
In 1863, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving and praise to God, and in 1941 Congress fixed the holiday on the fourth Thursday of November. For Christians the day is a good occasion, not the only one: Scripture calls believers to give thanks in every circumstance (1 Thessalonians 5:18) and always, for everything (Ephesians 5:20).
