About this picture
The stable in Bethlehem on the night Jesus was born: Mary in a blue mantle kneels beside the manger where the baby lies wrapped in swaddling cloths, Joseph stands with his staff, and an ox and a donkey rest in the straw. Two shepherds come in from the hillside, one carrying a lamb, and sheep, a hen with her chicks, a cat on a beam, lanterns and a bright star fill the picture, with the little town on the hill behind. Luke 2 tells how Mary laid her Son in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

The story
So Joseph also went up from Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, since he was from the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to him in marriage and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her Child to be born. And she gave birth to her firstborn, a Son. She wrapped Him in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.Luke 2:4–7 (BSB)
