About this picture

The prophet Elijah, grey-bearded in a rough brown cloak, sits on a rock beside the brook Cherith while a raven brings him a round loaf of bread and two more fly in over the ravine. His cave is behind him with a mat, a water jar and a leather bag, and a fox, frogs, a lizard and butterflies share the place with him. 1 Kings 17 tells how, in a time of drought, God sent Elijah to hide by the brook and commanded the ravens to feed him there, morning and evening.

The story

Then a revelation from the LORD came to Elijah: “Leave here, turn eastward, and hide yourself by the Brook of Cherith, east of the Jordan. And you are to drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” So Elijah did what the LORD had told him, and he went and lived by the Brook of Cherith, east of the Jordan. The ravens would bring him bread and meat in the morning and evening, and he would drink from the brook.1 Kings 17:2–6 (BSB)
