About this picture

The star has stopped over a stone house in Bethlehem. Mary sits in the doorway with the young child Jesus on her lap, and three wise men in rich robes and turbans bring their gifts, one kneeling with a golden chest. Their camels rest in bright saddles while servants unload chests and rolled carpets, and a well, goats, a dog, a donkey and water jars fill the courtyard. Matthew 2 says that when they saw the Child with His mother Mary, they fell down and worshiped Him, and gave Him gold and frankincense and myrrh.

The story

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stood over the place where the Child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with great delight. On coming to the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary, and they fell down and worshiped Him.
