About this picture

Morning light falls into the lions’ den. Daniel kneels with his hands folded, unhurt, while the lions lie around him, a lioness with her cubs among them and one big lion sound asleep. Above, King Darius in purple and gold leans over the edge with two guards. Doves on a ledge, an oil lamp in a niche, a rope hanging down and a heavy iron-bound door complete the den. Daniel 6 tells how the king hurried to the den at dawn and found that God had sent His angel to shut the lions’ mouths.

The story

At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the den of lions. When he reached the den, he cried out in a voice of anguish, “O Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?” Then Daniel replied, “O king, may you live forever! My God sent His angel and shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, for I was found innocent in His sight, and I have done no wrong against you, O king.”Daniel 6:19–22 (BSB)
