About this picture
The temple courts in Jerusalem, with tall columns and the temple building up the steps behind. Jesus, holding a whip of cords, has overturned the money changers’ tables: coins spill across the paving stones, cages stand open and white doves fly out, sheep and oxen hurry away, and merchants run with their bags. Baskets, jars, stools and striped awnings lie everywhere. John 2 tells how, at Passover, Jesus drove the sellers out and said His Father’s house must not be made into a marketplace.

The story
When the Jewish Passover was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple courts He found men selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and money changers seated at their tables. So He made a whip out of cords and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle. He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those selling doves He said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn My Father’s house into a marketplace!”John 2:13–16 (BSB)
