About this picture

Dawn on the Sea of Galilee: the sun rises behind the hills and lays a path of gold across the water. Jesus, in a white robe and blue mantle, stands on the lake, and Peter has climbed out of the boat and is walking toward Him with his hand out, while the others watch from the boat with its oars, nets, ropes and a lantern. A fish leaps, gulls fly over, and a village lies along the far shore. Matthew 14 tells how Jesus came to the disciples walking on the sea and called Peter to come to Him.

The story

During the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went out to them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus spoke up at once: “Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.” “Lord, if it is You,” Peter replied, “command me to come to You on the water.” “Come,” said Jesus. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus.Matthew 14:25–29 (BSB)
