About this plan

Matthew writes for readers who know the Scriptures of Israel, Mark tells the story fast, Luke sets it out in order with care for the outsider, and John writes “so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.” Reading all four in a month shows you Jesus from every side.

A good habit for this plan: keep a note of one thing Jesus says or does each day that surprises you, and pray about it.

How to keep going

Questions

How long does it take to read the four Gospels?

About 7–9 hours in all, so 13–17 minutes a day for a month. The four Gospels have 89 chapters.

Which Gospel should I read first?

This plan reads them in Bible order. If you are new to the Bible, many people suggest starting with Mark (the shortest) or John (written so that readers may believe).

Why are there four Gospels?

Four eyewitness-based accounts, written for different first readers, tell the same good news. Their differences in detail and order are like four people describing one event.
