About this plan

A chronological plan rearranges the chapters so the story runs forward. You meet Job in the age of Abraham, read Psalm 51 right after David and Bathsheba, hear Isaiah while Hezekiah reigns and read the Gospels as one life of Jesus.

How we ordered it:

Job is read after Genesis 11: the book is set in the age of the patriarchs.
Psalms with a historical note go where that note puts them (Psalm 51 after David and Bathsheba, Psalm 3 when David flees from Absalom, Psalm 18 with 2 Samuel 22). The other psalms of David are read in three groups through his reign, and Psalm 90, “a prayer of Moses,” follows Deuteronomy.
Chronicles is read beside the matching chapters of Samuel and Kings, so the same events come together.
Each prophet is read during the reign named in the book’s first verse (Isaiah 1:1, Hosea 1:1, Micah 1:1, Zephaniah 1:1). Jeremiah’s chapters are rearranged by the king they are dated to.
Where scholars disagree about dates (Job, Joel, Obadiah, Galatians, Hebrews), we follow the order most chronological plans use.
The four Gospels are read as one story: each chapter at the point in Jesus’ life it mostly covers. Paul’s letters are read where Acts places their writing.

How to keep going

Pray before you read. Ask God to open your eyes to His word. If you want words to start with, here is a prayer before reading the Bible.
Same time, same place. Tie your reading to something you already do every day: the first coffee, the lunch break, the last ten minutes before bed.
Write one line. After reading, jot down one verse that stood out and one sentence about it. Some people use S.O.A.P.: Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer.
Read with someone. Share the link with a friend, your spouse or your small group and read the same plan. A short message (“Day 12 done!”) keeps both of you going.
Missed a day? Keep going. Read today’s reading and catch up on a weekend, or just carry on. The aim is not a perfect checklist but time with God in His word.

Questions

What is the chronological order of the Bible?

Roughly: creation and the patriarchs (with Job), the exodus and the Law, the judges, the kings (with the psalms and the prophets placed in their reigns), the exile and the return, then the life of Jesus from the four Gospels together, and Acts with the letters placed where they were written.

Is a chronological Bible reading plan good for a first read?

Yes, if you want the story. It is easier to follow than reading in book order, because Chronicles sits beside Kings and the prophets sit beside the kings they preached to. If you want to finish one book at a time, choose the Bible in a Year plan instead.

Can dates in the Bible be known exactly?

Not always. The order of the kings is clear, but scholars disagree about when Job, Joel and some letters were written. This plan follows the order most chronological plans use and lists its choices on this page.
