About this plan
John begins before creation (“In the beginning was the Word”) and ends at breakfast on a beach with the risen Jesus. In between are seven signs, the “I am” sayings, the conversation with Nicodemus about being born again, the woman at the well, Lazarus raised, the Last Supper, the cross and the empty tomb.
It is often the first book given to someone who has just put their trust in Christ. If that is you, welcome: read a chapter a day, pray about what you read, and tell another Christian what you are learning.
How to keep going
- Pray before you read. Ask God to open your eyes to His word. If you want words to start with, here is a prayer before reading the Bible.
- Same time, same place. Tie your reading to something you already do every day: the first coffee, the lunch break, the last ten minutes before bed.
- Write one line. After reading, jot down one verse that stood out and one sentence about it. Some people use S.O.A.P.: Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer.
- Read with someone. Share the link with a friend, your spouse or your small group and read the same plan. A short message (“Day 12 done!”) keeps both of you going.
- Missed a day? Keep going. Read today’s reading and catch up on a weekend, or just carry on. The aim is not a perfect checklist but time with God in His word.
Questions
How long does it take to read the Gospel of John?
About 2 hours in all, so 4–6 minutes a day for three weeks.
Why is John a good book for new believers?
Because of its stated purpose (John 20:31): it was written so that readers may believe in Jesus and have life in His name. It explains who Jesus is more directly than any other book.
What should I read after John?
Mark or Luke for more of Jesus’ life, then Acts for the first church. The New Testament in 90 days or the beginners’ plan are good next steps.
