Prayer Points for Protection

These prayer points are for anyone asking God for protection: for yourself, for family protection at home and on the road, for children at school, and for protection from evil, fear and danger. They are drawn from Psalm 91 and other Scriptures about God as our refuge, and they end with what God promises when trouble does come. Each point has a verse and a short prayer.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, “You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

Psalm 91:1-2 (BSB)

Read the verse aloud first, then pray the prayer and name the people and places you are concerned about. A family can pray one section at bedtime; a prayer group can pray straight through. These prayers ask and trust; they do not try to command God or the devil. Verses are from the Berean Standard Bible.

Trusting God our refuge

  1. 1The name of the Lord, our strong tower

Lord, Your name is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. We run to You now, not to our own plans or precautions. Be our safe place today.

The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.

    Proverbs 18:10 (BSB)
  2. 2Shelter under His wings

Father, cover us with Your feathers, and let us find refuge under Your wings. Your faithfulness is our shield. We bring You every person we love and ask You to shelter them.

He will cover you with His feathers; under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and rampart.

    Psalm 91:4 (BSB)
  3. 3A Protector who never sleeps

Our help comes from You, Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. You will not let our feet slip, and You never slumber. Watch over us through every hour of this day and night.

My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector will not slumber.

    Psalm 121:2-3 (BSB)
  4. 4Our rock and deliverer

God, You are our rock, our fortress and our deliverer, our shield and our stronghold. When we feel exposed and weak, remind us who stands between us and harm.

The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

    Psalm 18:2 (BSB)

Protection for family and home

  1. 5Safe sleep in our home

Lord, we lie down and sleep and wake again because You sustain us. Guard our home through the night, protect it from fire, storm and harm, and give each person here peaceful sleep.

I lie down and sleep; I wake again, for the LORD sustains me.

    Psalm 3:5 (BSB)
  2. 6Protection on the road

Father, You command Your angels to guard those who trust You in all their ways. Keep us from testing You by carelessness, and protect us on highways and city streets, in airports and on school buses. Bring each of us home safely.

For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.

    Psalm 91:11 (BSB)
  3. 7Children at school and play

Heavenly Father, shelter our children as they go to school, play sports and spend time with friends. Surround them with the shield of Your favor, and let them grow up rejoicing in You.

But let all who take refuge in You rejoice; let them ever shout for joy. May You shelter them, that those who love Your name may rejoice in You. For surely You, O LORD, bless the righteous; You surround them with the shield of Your favor.

    Psalm 5:11-12 (BSB)
  4. 8Safety at work

Lord, You are good, a stronghold in the day of distress. Protect those who work in dangerous places: construction sites, factories, farms, hospitals and highways. Keep them alert, and bring them home safely.

The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of distress; He cares for those who trust in Him.

    Nahum 1:7 (BSB)

Protection from evil

  1. 9Deliver us from the evil one

Our Father, lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Guard our minds and hearts today, and keep us from every snare laid for us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’

    Matthew 6:13 (BSB)
  2. 10Kept while we live in the world

Lord Jesus, You did not ask the Father to take us out of the world, but to keep us from the evil one. Thank You that You still pray for us. Keep us faithful in the places where You have put us.

I am not asking that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one.

    John 17:15 (BSB)
  3. 11Standing firm in God’s armor

Mighty God, make us strong in You and in Your mighty power. Help us put on the full armor of God: truth, righteousness, faith and Your word, so that we can stand against the devil’s schemes.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes.

    Ephesians 6:10-11 (BSB)
  4. 12Resisting the devil

God, we submit ourselves to You. Give us courage to resist the devil: to turn away from what tempts us and walk away from what drags us down, trusting Your word that he will flee.

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

    James 4:7 (BSB)
  5. 13A way out of temptation

Faithful God, You will not let us be tempted beyond what we can bear. When temptation comes to us or to those we love, show us the way of escape, and give us the will to take it.

No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it.

    1 Corinthians 10:13 (BSB)

Protection from fear and danger

  1. 14No fear of the night

Lord, keep us from fearing the terror of the night, the arrow that flies by day, or the sickness that stalks in darkness. Calm the fears that grip us after dark, and let us rest in Your care.

You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the calamity that destroys at noon.

    Psalm 91:5-6 (BSB)

    Psalm 140:4 (BSB)
  4. 17Storms and disasters

God, when people cry out to You in trouble, You calm the storm to a whisper. Protect all who are in the path of hurricanes, floods, fires and earthquakes, and guide the rescuers who go to help.

Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress. He calmed the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed. They rejoiced in the silence, and He guided them to the harbor they desired.

    Psalm 107:28-30 (BSB)

When trouble comes

  1. 18God with us in deep waters

Lord, You told Your people that when they passed through the waters You would be with them. You do not promise we will never face deep waters or fire, but be with us there, and do not let them overwhelm us.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you go through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched; the flames will not set you ablaze.

    Isaiah 43:2 (BSB)
  2. 19Held in Jesus’ hand

Lord Jesus, no one can snatch Your sheep out of Your hand or out of the Father’s hand. Whatever harm may touch our bodies, keep our souls safe in You forever.

I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand. My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand.

    John 10:28-29 (BSB)
  3. 20Nothing can separate us from God’s love

Father, neither death nor life, nor any power, nor anything in all creation can separate us from Your love in Christ Jesus our Lord. Let that be our deepest protection and our steady peace.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

    Romans 8:38-39 (BSB)

A closing prayer

Lord, You are our refuge and our fortress, our God in whom we trust. Shelter us and those we love under Your wings. Guard our homes, our roads and our children. Deliver us from the evil one, give us strength to stand firm, and keep fear from ruling our hearts. And when trouble comes, hold us in Your hand, where nothing can separate us from Your love. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Questions

Does Psalm 91 promise Christians will never be harmed?

Psalm 91 is a song of trust in God’s protection, and Christians rightly pray it. But when Satan quoted verses 11-12 to tempt Jesus to throw Himself from the temple, Jesus answered, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test” (Matthew 4:6-7). Believers still face illness and danger; the deepest promise is that nothing can separate us from God’s love in Christ (Romans 8:38-39).

Is it biblical to pray for protection from the devil?

Yes. Jesus taught His disciples to pray, “deliver us from the evil one” (Matthew 6:13), and He asked the Father to keep them from the evil one (John 17:15). Scripture also tells believers to submit to God and resist the devil (James 4:7) and to put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18). We ask God to protect us; no special formula is needed.

What is the armor of God?

In Ephesians 6:10-18, Paul describes the believer’s protection in Christ as armor: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. He ends by urging believers to pray in the Spirit at all times.
