Comfort & Not Alone

Nothing Can Separate Us

Romans 8:38-39

Romans 8:38-39 is the close of Romans 8, where the apostle Paul, writing to the believers in Rome, sums up why those who belong to Christ can be sure of God’s love.

Father, thank You that nothing can separate me from Your love in Christ Jesus. Not death, not life, not what is happening now, and not what I fear is coming. When I feel far from You, Your love has not moved. When I grieve, hold me. When I am afraid of tomorrow, remind me that it is already Yours. I rest in Your love tonight. Amen.

The Scripture

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

— Romans 8:38-39

About this verse

Romans 8 begins with “no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” and ends with these two verses. Just before them, Paul asks, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” and names trouble, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger and sword. His answer is that in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Then he widens the list until it covers everything: death and life, angels and principalities, the present and the future, height and depth, “nor anything else in all creation.” Paul says he is convinced. God’s love in Christ does not come and go with our circumstances; it holds us through the worst of them. Grief, illness and fear can make God feel far away, but this passage says His love has not let go. This prayer is for anyone grieving, afraid, or wondering whether God still loves them.
