Comfort & Not Alone

When You Pass Through the Waters

Isaiah 43:2

Isaiah 43:2 says: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you go through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched.” The LORD speaks it to His people Israel.

Lord, You did not promise I would never go through deep water or fire. You promised You would be with me. I am in deep water now, so be with me here. Do not let the rivers overwhelm me or the flames set me ablaze. You have called me by name, and I am Yours. Hold me, and bring me through to the other side. Amen.

Isaiah 43:2 says: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you go through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched.” The LORD speaks it to His people Israel.

The Scripture

— Isaiah 43:2

About this verse

Isaiah 43 begins with the LORD speaking to His people, as the One who created Jacob and formed Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine! Then come the waters and the fire. The promise does not say God’s people will never pass through deep water or walk through fire. It says when, and it puts God in the middle of it: I will be with you. The rivers will not overwhelm you, and the flames will not set you ablaze. The chapter goes on to say why He keeps them: because you are precious and honored in My sight, and because I love you. A little later He calls Himself the LORD who makes a way in the sea and a path through the surging waters. It is a prayer for anyone going through something that feels as if it could drown them or burn them.
