His Mercies Are New Every Morning

Lamentations 3:23

Lord, yesterday is done, with all its failures and grief. Your mercies are new this morning, and great is Your faithfulness. Meet me at the start of this day, and let me begin again in You. Amen.

The Scripture

“His mercies are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

— Lamentations 3:23

About this verse

Lamentations is traditionally attributed to Jeremiah, written in the wreckage of Jerusalem's fall — the temple destroyed, the city burned, its people exiled or dead. It is one of the bleakest books in Scripture, a sustained funeral poem for a nation. Then, right in its middle, in the same breath as 'I have forgotten what happiness is,' comes a turn: 'His mercies are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.' The claim isn't that the disaster wasn't real — it was — but that God's compassion resets daily even inside genuine devastation, not because circumstances improved but because His character doesn't run out. This is a prayer for waking up after a painful day and needing a true reason to believe today can be different.
