Grief & Loss

Every Tear Wiped Away

Revelation 21:4

Revelation 21:4 is part of the vision given to John on the island of Patmos, in which a loud voice from the throne announces that God will dwell with His people in the new heaven and new earth.

Lord God, my heart is heavy, and I miss the one I have lost. You see every tear I cry. You have promised a day when You will wipe them all away, when there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain. Until that day, stay close to me in my sorrow. Hold me up, and let this hope carry me through. Amen.

About this verse

Near the end of the Bible, John sees “a new heaven and a new earth” and the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God. A loud voice from the throne says that the dwelling place of God is with man, and that God Himself will be with His people. Then comes the promise: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,” and there will be no more death, mourning, crying or pain, for “the former things have passed away.” The tears are not ignored or scolded; God Himself wipes them away. Grief is real now, and the passage does not pretend otherwise. It looks ahead to a day with no more death and no more mourning, and then the One seated on the throne says, “Behold, I make all things new.” This prayer is for anyone mourning a husband, wife, parent, child or friend, who needs to grieve with hope.
