Forgiveness & Grace

A Hurricane Crossed Kauai Overnight

Lamentations 3:22-23

Father, it came again before I had finished clearing away the last one, and I have nothing left to build with. Thank You that Your mercy does not run out — it was already new this morning, before I opened my eyes. Set one stone back in place for me today, and give me strength to lift the next one. Amen.

The Scripture

“Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!”

— Lamentations 3:22-23

About this verse

Lamentations was written in the ruins of Jerusalem after the Babylonian army burned the city and the temple. It is a book of five poems, and the first four are acrostics that walk through the Hebrew alphabet as if grief had to be told from A to Z. Chapter 3 sits at the center, and it opens with some of the darkest lines in Scripture. Then, with nothing yet rebuilt, the poet stops and remembers: "Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!" The rubble had not been cleared when he wrote that. Nothing outside had changed; what changed was what he called to mind. That matters when trouble keeps coming back before you have finished recovering from the last time, and you have nothing left to start over with. The promise is not that the damage is undone by morning. It is that mercy arrives fresh each day, enough for that day's piece of the rebuilding.
