An Eye to Count a Billion Galaxies

Psalm 147:3-4

Father, tonight the sky keeps telling me how big You are — and Your Word says You stay close to my broken heart. The hands that named every star are holding mine. Bind up what still hurts, and let me rest under Your sky. Amen.

The Scripture

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He determines the number of the stars; He calls them each by name.”

— Psalm 147:3-4

About this verse

Psalm 147 praises the God who builds up Jerusalem and gathers its exiles, and then, in back-to-back lines, says He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds, and determines the number of the stars and calls each one by name. Binding a wound is close, patient work: you cannot do it from a distance. Counting stars is the opposite, a job no human hand can finish. When God brought Abraham outside at night, He told him to count the stars if he was able; he wasn't. The psalm says God has already done it, and named each one besides. Isaiah uses the same image of a God who calls the starry host by name so that not one is missing. Put together, the night sky becomes a promise instead of a reminder of how small you are: the God who keeps track of every light up there has not lost track of you. This prayer is for the night when the hurt comes back after dark and you need to rest under His sky.
