A village wedding in Cana, and the wine ran out — which in that culture was not an inconvenience but a public humiliation the family would be remembered for. Jesus' mother told Him. He pointed to six stone water jars standing there for ceremonial washing, the vessels of religious duty, holding twenty or thirty gallons apiece, and had the servants fill them to the brim. What came out was wine. The master of the feast, who had no idea where it came from, pulled the bridegroom aside and said what everyone was thinking: every host serves the good wine first and the cheap wine once the guests can't tell the difference — 'but you have kept the good wine until now.' John calls this the first of His signs. Before a single sermon, before a healing, Jesus announced Himself by reversing the order the world runs on: not the best first and then decline, but the best saved for last.
