You're Not Keeping This Watch Alone

Psalm 130:6

This is from a Song of Ascents in which the psalmist cries to the LORD out of the depths and waits for Him (Psalm 130:1-6).

Lord, at 3 a.m. I feel like the only one awake. But You didn't send me to stand this watch alone — You came and stood it with me. Let me stop fighting the night and wait beside You, shoulder to shoulder, till the light comes. Amen.

Tell the Lord honestly what is keeping you awake in the night.
Thank Him that you are not keeping this watch alone, even when no one else in the house is awake.
Ask for the kind of waiting the watchmen had: steady, and sure the morning is coming.
Confess where you have been fighting the night instead of waiting for Him in it.
Thank Him for His forgiveness, which the psalm names before it speaks of waiting.
Pray by name for someone else who is awake and afraid tonight, that morning would come for them.

About this verse

Psalm 130 is one of the Songs of Ascents, sung by pilgrims climbing toward Jerusalem, and it begins in the worst place a person can pray from: 'Out of the depths I cry to You, O LORD!' The image in verse 6 is drawn from real work. Night watchmen stood on the city walls in shifts, straining east through the dark — not hoping the morning might come, but knowing it would, and waiting for the exact moment the horizon cracked gold. That is the psalmist's picture of waiting on God: not anxious pacing, but a watch kept with certainty. The night is real, the waiting is long, and the morning is not in doubt.

At 3 a.m., when you're awake again and the whole world seems asleep except you
During a stretch of insomnia, when your mind gets loud the moment the house goes quiet
While waiting on news that hasn't come yet — a diagnosis, a decision, a phone call
In a long season where nothing has changed and you're tired of waiting well
When anxiety keeps you pacing instead of resting
Beside someone else's sickbed, on a night watch you didn't choose
