A Prayer Before Surgery

Psalm 31:14-15

Psalm 31:14-15 is from a psalm of David, written in deep distress when he felt surrounded and forgotten, in which he turns to God and says, “My times are in Your hands.”

Lord, I trust in You. You are my God. My times are in Your hands: this day, this surgery, and every moment while I am asleep. Guide the hands and minds of my doctors and nurses. Quiet my fear, and keep my heart at rest in You. When I wake, let me know that I am still held by You. Amen.

The Scripture

“But I trust in You, O LORD; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in Your hands; deliver me from my enemies and from those who pursue me.”

Prayer points from Psalm 31:14-15

  1. Tell God honestly what you are afraid of.
  2. Say to Him, as David did, that you trust Him and He is your God.
  3. Place the timing and the outcome of the surgery in His hands.
  4. Pray for your surgeon, anesthesiologist, nurses and the whole team.
  5. Ask for peace for your family while they wait.
  6. Thank God that He holds you while you sleep.

About this verse

Psalm 31 is a psalm of David from a time of real distress. He writes that his eyes fail from sorrow, his strength is drained, his friends flee when they see him, and there is “terror on every side.” Then the psalm turns: “But I trust in You, O LORD.” He calls God his own God and says, “My times are in Your hands.” David does not pretend his situation is easy. He hands it over. Before surgery, so much is out of our control: the timing, the outcome, the hours under anesthesia. These verses do not ask us to stop being afraid by willpower. They place our times in safer hands than ours. And they sit well alongside good medical care: trust God, and let the people He has given do their work. This prayer is for anyone getting ready for surgery or a medical procedure, today or soon.
