A Short Prayer for Healing and Recovery

Jeremiah 17:14

Jeremiah 17:14 is the prophet Jeremiah’s own prayer to God, spoken at a time when people were mocking his warnings and asking where the word of the LORD was.

Lord, You are the One who heals. I bring my loved one to You. Heal them, O LORD, and they will be healed; save them, and they will be saved. Give their body rest and strength to recover, and give their doctors wisdom. Lift their spirits on the hard days. You are our praise, Lord, and we trust them to You. Amen.

If you are the one who is sick

Lord, heal me, and I will be healed; save me, and I will be saved, for You are my praise. You know this body and this illness better than anyone. Give me rest, patience and strength to recover, and give wisdom to everyone caring for me. On the hard days, keep my eyes on You. Amen.

About this verse

Jeremiah spent decades delivering messages people did not want to hear. In chapter 17, after speaking of the LORD as “the fountain of living water,” he turns to God with a personal prayer: “Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed; save me, and I will be saved, for You are my praise.” The very next verse shows why he needed it: people kept taunting him, asking where the word of the LORD was. His prayer is short and full of confidence, not in his own strength, but in God. If God heals, the healing is real; if God saves, the saving holds. And whatever happens, “You are my praise.” Jeremiah was asking for more than physical healing, but his words fit a sickbed well, and they can be prayed for anyone who is ill or recovering, alongside the doctors and treatment they need. This prayer is for anyone praying for a loved one’s healing and recovery, with another form for praying it over yourself.
