John 15 records one of Jesus's final teachings to His disciples on the night before His crucifixion, likely spoken as they walked past vineyards near Jerusalem. He uses the most familiar plant in the region — Israel itself is pictured as a vine throughout the Old Testament — to describe the relationship He wants with His followers: 'I am the vine; you are the branches.' A branch cut off from the vine cannot produce fruit no matter how hard it tries; its life comes entirely from staying attached. The Father is the gardener who prunes what is unproductive so the branch can bear more. This is one of Jesus's seven 'I am' statements in John, and it's a prayer for the exhaustion of trying to grow, serve, or hold life together on your own strength.
