I Am the Vine

John 15:5

Jesus, You are the vine and I am only a branch. Apart from You I can do nothing. Keep me joined to You, that my life would bear the fruit only You can grow. Amen.

The Scripture

“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

— John 15:5

About this verse

On the night before his crucifixion, Jesus gathered his disciples for final teaching and used the vineyard imagery familiar to every Judean farmer: he is the vine, his Father the vinedresser, and his followers the branches. A branch cut off from the vine cannot produce fruit on its own effort — it withers, no matter how hard it tries. The point is not striving but abiding, staying connected, drawing life from the same source continuously. This teaching came moments before Jesus faced betrayal and death, as if to say: whatever happens next, your life and fruitfulness depend on staying joined to me, not on your own strength. This is a prayer for anyone striving under their own power and needing to remember where real strength comes from.
