John 8:12 records Jesus speaking this claim during the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem, a festival where the temple courts were lit each night by massive golden lampstands that lit up the whole city — a vivid backdrop for Him to declare, 'I am the light of the world.' It is another of the seven 'I am' statements in John's gospel, each pointing to a need Jesus meets at its root. Here the promise is guidance and safety for anyone walking in darkness: not just information about the way forward, but the light itself to walk by, one step at a time rather than the whole path revealed at once. This is a prayer for the times you cannot see what's ahead and need enough light for the very next step.
