Words of Christ

I Am He

John 4:26

Jesus, like the woman at the well, You know all I have done and still meet me kindly. You say: I am He, the One you waited for. Give me the living water that never runs dry. Amen.

The Scripture

“I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”

— John 4:26

About this verse

John 4 tells of Jesus resting at a well outside a Samaritan town at midday — an hour women typically avoided, since it meant drawing water alone under the harsh sun rather than in the company of others at dawn. Jews and Samaritans were divided by centuries of religious and ethnic hostility, so a Jewish rabbi speaking openly to a Samaritan woman, and one whose life she seemed to be hiding, was already startling. When she raises the hope of a coming Messiah, Jesus answers plainly, 'I, the one speaking to you — I am he,' revealing himself first not to religious leaders but to an outsider carrying shame. This prayer is for the moment you feel fully known — the parts you'd rather hide included — and need to hear that you are still being met with kindness, not condemnation.
