Christmas Eve Prayer

Luke 2:10-11

Luke 2:10-11 is the announcement the angel of the Lord made to shepherds keeping watch over their flocks by night near Bethlehem: do not be afraid, for a Savior, Christ the Lord, has been born today in the city of David.

Lord God, tonight I hear the angel’s words again: Do not be afraid. Good news of great joy has come for all the people. A Savior has been born, Christ the Lord. Quiet the noise of this night, and let me hurry to Him like the shepherds. Take away my fear, fill me with joy, and let me worship Him tonight. Amen.

About this verse

Luke tells the first Christmas night simply. There was no room in the inn, so Mary wrapped her newborn Son in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger. In the fields nearby, shepherds were keeping watch over their flocks by night when an angel of the Lord stood before them, and they were terrified. The angel’s first words were, “Do not be afraid!” Then came the news: “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: Today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord!” The shepherds hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and the Baby, just as the angel had told them. Christmas Eve is the night to do what they did: set aside the fear and the hurry, and go to see Him. This prayer is for Christmas Eve, at a candlelight service, at home before bed, or on the way to midnight Mass.
