Christmas Prayer for Family

Luke 2:14

Luke 2:14 is the song of the great company of angels who appeared with the angel to the shepherds near Bethlehem on the night Jesus was born, praising God and announcing peace on earth to those on whom His favor rests.

Father in heaven, glory to You in the highest! Thank You for sending Jesus, and for bringing my family together this Christmas. Let Your peace rest on our home, on those gathered here, on those far away, and on the ones we miss. Where we have hurt each other, help us forgive. Make our home a place where Your favor and joy can be seen. Amen.

About this verse

On the night Jesus was born, an angel told shepherds near Bethlehem the news, and then “suddenly there appeared with the angel a great multitude of the heavenly host, praising God.” Their song is one sentence: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests!” It puts things in order. First God is praised; then peace comes down to earth, to ordinary people like shepherds keeping watch by night. Christmas with family can be full of joy and strain at once: travel, old hurts, someone missing from the table. The angels’ song makes a good family prayer for that day, because it begins with God and asks for His peace where we most need it. And the shepherds’ answer can be the family’s too: “Let us go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened.” This prayer is for families to pray together on Christmas Day, or for one person to pray over their family.
