A Christmas Prayer

Isaiah 9:6

Isaiah 9:6 is the prophet Isaiah’s promise of a child born to reign on David’s throne, with names no ordinary king could carry, words Christians have read at Christmas for centuries as a promise of Jesus.

Lord Jesus, unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and You are that Son. Wonderful Counselor, guide me. Mighty God, be strong where I am weak. Everlasting Father, hold my family close. Prince of Peace, quiet my heart this Christmas. I welcome You again with joy and give You my whole life. Amen.

The Scripture

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

— Isaiah 9:6

Prayer points from Isaiah 9:6

  1. Thank God that the child was given to us, as a gift.
  2. Pray each of His names slowly: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
  3. Ask Jesus for counsel in a decision you face.
  4. Bring Him a weakness and ask for His strength.
  5. Pray for peace in your home and in the world.
  6. Give Him your coming year as your Christmas gift.

About this verse

Isaiah 9 begins in darkness and turns to light, and then it gives the reason: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders.” The child receives four names: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. They are too large for any ordinary king, and the next verse says that of His government and peace there will be no end. Christians have read these words at Christmas for centuries, and many know them best from the chorus in Handel’s Messiah. The wonder is in two small words, unto us: the child is given to people like us, as a gift. Each of His names meets a real need: wisdom when we don’t know what to do, strength when we are weak, a Father’s care, and peace. This prayer is for Christmas Day or any day of the Christmas season, alone or with your family.
