Forgiveness & Grace

Faithful and Just to Forgive

1 John 1:9

1 John 1:9 is a promise from the First Letter of John, written to fellow believers about what God does when we confess our sins.

Father, I won’t pretend that I have no sin. You already see what I have done and what I have left undone. I confess it to You now, plainly, without excuses. Thank You that You are faithful and just to forgive me, because of Jesus. Wash me clean from all unrighteousness, and help me walk in Your light again. Amen.

About this verse

John has just written that “God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.” Then he names two ways people dodge that light: claiming to walk with God while living in darkness, and saying we have no sin. Verse 9 is the honest way out. To confess is to agree with God about what we have done, without excuses. And the promise rests on who God is, not on how sorry we feel: He is faithful to His word, and He is just, because, as John says a few lines later, Jesus Christ is “the atoning sacrifice for our sins.” He does more than forgive; He cleanses us from all unrighteousness. John writes so that his readers will not sin, but he does not want anyone who does to stay buried in it. This prayer is for anyone carrying guilt, preparing for confession, or wanting a clean start with God tonight.
