The Bible story
Jonah and the Great Fish
God told Jonah to go and warn the city of Nineveh, but Jonah boarded a ship going the other way. In a great storm the sailors threw him into the sea, and the LORD sent a great fish to swallow him. After three days and nights Jonah prayed, the fish put him out on dry land, and this time he went to Nineveh.
And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
— Jonah 2:10 (BSB)
The Bible calls it a great fish; it is often drawn as a whale.
