Prayer Points for Revival and Spiritual Awakening
These prayer points for revival are for churches, prayer groups and believers who long for God to revive His people and awaken our nation. Revival begins with God’s own people: a fresh hunger for Him, honest repentance, love for His Word and boldness to share Christ. Spiritual awakening is the word often used when that renewal spills over and many who did not know Jesus come to faith.
Will You not revive us again, that Your people may rejoice in You?
Psalm 85:6 (BSB)
Revival is God’s work, not something we can schedule or produce, so these points ask, confess and trust rather than demand. Pray them over several weeks, one section per meeting, starting with your own heart. Read each verse aloud, pray the prayer, then leave a short silence for people to confess and ask in their own words.
Hunger for God
1Thirsting for God Himself
O God, You are our God; earnestly we seek You. Forgive us for being satisfied with less. Make our souls thirst for You the way a dry and weary land thirsts for water, and let nothing else satisfy us.
A Psalm of David, when he was in the Wilderness of Judah. O God, You are my God. Earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You. My body yearns for You in a dry and weary land without water.
Psalm 63:1 (BSB)2Do it again in our day
LORD, we have heard the report of what You have done, and we stand in awe. Revive Your work in these years; make it known in our day. And in Your wrath, remember mercy.
O LORD, I have heard the report of You; I stand in awe, O LORD, of Your deeds. Revive them in these years; make them known in these years. In Your wrath, remember mercy!
Habakkuk 3:2 (BSB)3Hungry for righteousness
Lord Jesus, You said those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled. Give us that hunger. Make us want holiness more than comfort, and Your kingdom more than our own plans.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Matthew 5:6 (BSB)4Not by our might, but by Your Spirit
LORD of Hosts, revival will not come by our might, our programs or our power, but by Your Spirit. Keep us from trying to manufacture what only You can give, and teach us to depend on You in prayer.
So he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the LORD of Hosts.
Zechariah 4:6 (BSB)
Repentance and returning
5Returning with all our hearts
LORD our God, You are gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in loving devotion. We return to You with all our hearts. Help us rend our hearts and not our garments, with sorrow that is real and not for show.
“Yet even now,” declares the LORD, “return to Me with all your heart, with fasting, weeping, and mourning.” So rend your hearts and not your garments, and return to the LORD your God. For He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion. And He relents from sending disaster.
Joel 2:12-13 (BSB)6Humbling ourselves and seeking Your face
LORD, we are a people called by Your name. Teach us to humble ourselves, pray, seek Your face and turn from our wicked ways. We have not earned Your help; we ask for mercy. Hear from heaven and forgive our sin.
and if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14 (BSB)7Confessing our sins
Father, we confess our sins to You as Your church: prayerlessness, pride, gossip, love of comfort and a cold heart toward the lost. Thank You that You are faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9 (BSB)8Waking from lukewarm faith
Lord Jesus, You rebuke and discipline those You love. Where we have grown lukewarm, make us earnest and repentant. We hear You knocking, and we open the door. Come in and share the table with us again.
Those I love I rebuke and discipline. Therefore be earnest and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and dine with him, and he with Me.
Revelation 3:19-20 (BSB)
Revive Your church
9Revived by Your Word
Lord, our souls cling to the dust; revive us according to Your word. Give our church a fresh hunger for Scripture, and let the Bible be read, preached and obeyed among us.
My soul cleaves to the dust; revive me according to Your word.
Psalm 119:25 (BSB)10The joy of Your salvation
God, restore to us the joy of Your salvation. Where serving You has become duty without delight, sustain us with a willing spirit, so that our worship is glad and our faith is contagious.
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and sustain me with a willing spirit.
Psalm 51:12 (BSB)11Filled with Your Spirit
Father in heaven, You give the Holy Spirit to those who ask You. We ask You to fill Your people with Your Spirit, so that we know Your love, walk in holiness and bear witness to Jesus.
So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
Luke 11:13 (BSB)12Rooted in the love of Christ
Father, out of the riches of Your glory, strengthen us through Your Spirit, so that Christ dwells in our hearts through faith. Root us in love, and help us grasp how wide and long and high and deep the love of Christ is.
I ask that out of the riches of His glory He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. Then you, being rooted and grounded in love, will have power, together with all the saints, to comprehend the length and width and height and depth of the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Ephesians 3:16-19 (BSB)13Wake up, O sleeper
Lord Jesus, wake us up. Where we have slept through Your call, careless about sin and quiet about the gospel, rouse us and shine on us, so that we live wide awake to You.
So it is said: “Wake up, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
Ephesians 5:14 (BSB)
Awakening in our nation
14Times of refreshing
Lord, call our nation to repent and turn back, so that sins may be wiped away and times of refreshing may come from Your presence. Let many Americans turn to Jesus, the Christ, and find forgiveness in Him.
Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that He may send Jesus, the Christ, who has been appointed for you.
Acts 3:19-20 (BSB)15Patience that leads to repentance
Lord, You are patient, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance. Thank You for Your patience with our country. Use this time of mercy to bring our neighbors, coworkers and leaders to repentance and faith.
The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance.
2 Peter 3:9 (BSB)16Your word spreading and prevailing
Lord, as Your word spread and prevailed in Ephesus, let it spread through our towns, campuses and homes. Turn people from empty hopes to You, and let Bibles be opened where they have gathered dust.
So the word of the Lord powerfully continued to spread and prevail.
Acts 19:20 (BSB)17Awakening in the next generation
God of our fathers, do not let this generation grow up without knowing You. Awaken students and young adults across America, and help us declare to them the praises of the LORD and the wonders You have done.
We will not hide them from their children but will declare to the next generation the praises of the LORD and His might and the wonders He has performed.
Psalm 78:4 (BSB)18Boldness beyond our walls
Holy Spirit, when the first believers prayed, You filled them and they spoke the word of God boldly. Fill us with that boldness, so that revival does not stay inside our buildings but reaches our streets.
After they had prayed, their meeting place was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
Acts 4:31 (BSB)
Perseverance and lasting fruit
19Sowing in tears
LORD, we sow in tears for our families, our church and our nation. Keep us praying and sowing when nothing seems to change, and in Your time let us return with shouts of joy, carrying sheaves.
Those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy. He who goes out weeping, bearing a trail of seed, will surely return with shouts of joy, carrying sheaves of grain.
Psalm 126:5-6 (BSB)20Fruit in changed lives
Holy Spirit, let revival show up in changed lives, not just full meetings: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control in our homes, workplaces and church.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22-23 (BSB)21The glory to Your name alone
Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to Your name be the glory. Whatever You do among us, keep us from boasting, building platforms or taking credit, because every good thing comes from Your love and faithfulness.
Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to Your name be the glory, because of Your loving devotion, because of Your faithfulness.
Psalm 115:1 (BSB)
A closing prayer
Father, we cannot revive ourselves. Only You can. So we humble ourselves before You and ask: revive us again, that Your people may rejoice in You. Wake up Your church, cleanse our hearts, fill us with Your Spirit and give us love for the lost. Let the name of Jesus be honored in our homes, our churches and our nation, for Your glory alone. Amen.

Questions
What is revival?
In evangelical usage, revival means God renewing His own people: a fresh sense of His holiness, deep repentance, love for Christ and His Word, and new boldness in witness. Psalm 85:6 prays for it directly. When renewal spreads and many unbelievers come to faith, it is often called a spiritual awakening, as in America’s First and Second Great Awakenings in the 1700s and early 1800s.
How do you lead a prayer meeting for revival?
Begin with Scripture and worship, then move from confession to petition: your own hearts first, then your church, then your community and nation. Keep prayers short so many can pray, leave room for silence, and meet regularly over weeks rather than once. Revival prayer is persistent prayer; Jesus told His disciples to pray at all times and not lose heart (Luke 18:1).
What Bible verses are about revival?
Psalm 85:6, Psalm 80:18-19, Psalm 119:25 and Habakkuk 3:2 ask God to revive His people. Isaiah 57:15 says He revives the heart of the contrite. Acts 3:19-20 links repentance with times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord, and 2 Chronicles 7:14 describes God’s people humbling themselves, praying and turning from their wicked ways.
Can we make revival happen?
No. Revival is a work of God’s Spirit, not the result of a method or an event (Zechariah 4:6). What God asks of His people is to humble themselves, pray, repent, obey His Word and keep sharing the gospel. Churches sometimes call a series of evangelistic meetings a revival, but no meeting can guarantee what only God can give.
