Prayer Points for the Month of September

These prayer points for the month of September are for the start of fall, for individuals, families, prayer meetings and churches alike. September opens with Labor Day, and in many churches small groups, Sunday school and ministries start up again. Students gather at their school flagpoles for See You at the Pole, and families honor grandparents on Grandparents Day. These points pray for work and workers, ministries restarting, students praying at school, the harvest of souls, and grandparents, each point with its own verse.

For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.

Ephesians 2:10 (BSB)

Pray one section a week through September, or one point a day. On Labor Day weekend, pray the work section together. At a small-group kickoff, let a different person read each verse and lead its prayer, then give time to pray for each person’s work and for one person each of you hopes will come to faith this fall.

Work and workers

  1. 1Work as part of God’s good design

LORD God, before sin ever entered the world, You placed the man in the garden to cultivate it and keep it. Thank You that work is part of Your good design. Help us see our jobs, paid or unpaid, as service to You.

Then the LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.

    Genesis 2:15 (BSB)
  2. 2Enjoying our work

God, Your word says that to eat, drink and enjoy our work is a gift from Your hand. For everyone going back to the routine after Labor Day, give joy in the work itself, not only in the paycheck or the weekend.

Nothing is better for a man than to eat and drink and enjoy his work. I have also seen that this is from the hand of God.

    Ecclesiastes 2:24 (BSB)
  3. 3Integrity no one can fault

Lord, Daniel’s rivals searched for a charge against him but found no corruption, because he was trustworthy. Make believers like that at work: honest in reports, careful with money, and faithful when no one is checking.

Thus the administrators and satraps sought a charge against Daniel concerning the kingdom, but they could find no charge or corruption, because he was trustworthy, and no negligence or corruption was found in him.

    Daniel 6:4 (BSB)
  4. 4Honest scales in business

LORD, dishonest scales are an abomination to You, but an accurate weight is Your delight. Bless Christian business owners and managers with honest dealings, fair wages and the courage to do right when cutting corners would be easier.

Dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD, but an accurate weight is His delight.

    Proverbs 11:1 (BSB)
  5. 5Daily bread for those looking for work

Father, Jesus taught us to ask You for our daily bread. We ask it for those who are unemployed, underemployed or working two jobs to get by. Provide what they need today, open doors of good work, and keep their hope in You.

Give us this day our daily bread.

Small groups and ministries starting again

  1. 6Gathering with glad hearts

Lord, the first believers met daily, broke bread from house to house and shared their meals with gladness, and You added to their number. As small groups start again this fall, fill living rooms with that same gladness, honest prayer and care for one another.

With one accord they continued to meet daily in the temple courts and to break bread from house to house, sharing their meals with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

    Acts 2:46-47 (BSB)
  2. 7When God’s people talk together

LORD, when those who feared You spoke with one another, You listened and heard, and a scroll of remembrance was written before You. Listen as our groups open Your word together, and let our conversations honor Your name.

At that time those who feared the LORD spoke with one another, and the LORD listened and heard them. So a scroll of remembrance was written before Him regarding those who feared the LORD and honored His name.

    Malachi 3:16 (BSB)
  3. 8Every gift used to serve

Father, You have given each of us something to use in serving one another, as good stewards of Your grace. Fill our children’s ministry, greeting teams, choirs and tech booths with willing volunteers this fall.

As good stewards of the manifold grace of God, each of you should use whatever gift he has received to serve one another.

    1 Peter 4:10 (BSB)
  4. 9Leaders who train the next leaders

Lord, Paul told Timothy to entrust what he taught to faithful people who would teach others as well. Raise up new small-group leaders and Sunday school teachers, and help those who lead now to train the ones who will follow them.

And the things that you have heard me say among many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be qualified to teach others as well.

    2 Timothy 2:2 (BSB)
  5. 10A Barnabas for every newcomer

Lord, when the disciples were wary of Saul, Barnabas brought him to the apostles and spoke up for him. Give our church people like Barnabas, who notice newcomers this fall, introduce them, and help them find a place to belong.

Then Barnabas brought him to the apostles and described how Saul had seen the Lord, who had spoken to him on the road to Damascus, and how Saul had spoken boldly in that city in the name of Jesus.

    Acts 9:27 (BSB)

Students praying at school

  1. 11Prayer at daybreak

O LORD, in the morning You hear our voice, and at daybreak we lay our requests before You. Bless the students who gather around their school flagpoles for See You at the Pole. Hear their prayers for their schools, teachers and friends.

In the morning, O LORD, You hear my voice; at daybreak I lay my plea before You and wait in expectation.

Psalm 5:3 (BSB) · Pray this verse →
  2. 12Not too young to speak

LORD, You told Jeremiah not to say he was only a child, and not to be afraid, because You were with him. Give young believers courage to pray in public, live for You at school and speak about You with kindness.

But the LORD told me: “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’ For to everyone I send you, you must go, and all that I command you, you must speak. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you,” declares the LORD.

    Jeremiah 1:7-8 (BSB)
  3. 13They had been with Jesus

Lord Jesus, people marveled at the boldness of Peter and John, ordinary men, and took note that they had been with You. Let teachers and classmates see something different in Christian students this year, and trace it back to time spent with You.

When they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they marveled and took note that these men had been with Jesus.

    Acts 4:13 (BSB)

The harvest of souls

  1. 14Before another harvest passes

LORD, Your people once lamented that the harvest had passed and the summer had ended, and they were not saved. Give us urgency for friends and family who do not know Jesus. Do not let another season pass without our praying and speaking.

“The harvest has passed, the summer has ended, but we have not been saved.”

    Jeremiah 8:20 (BSB)
  2. 15Sowers and reapers rejoicing together

Lord Jesus, one sows and another reaps, and both rejoice together. Thank You for everyone who sowed the gospel in our lives. Help us sow faithfully in others, and rejoice when someone else gets to reap.

Already the reaper draws his wages and gathers a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may rejoice together. For in this case the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.

    John 4:36-37 (BSB)
  3. 16Sowing morning and evening

Father, we do not know which seed will grow. Help us sow in the morning and not rest our hands in the evening: a kind word, an invitation, a Bible verse, the story of what You have done. The growth is Yours.

Sow your seed in the morning, and do not rest your hands in the evening, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or if both will equally prosper.

    Ecclesiastes 11:6 (BSB)
  4. 17Wise to win souls

Lord, the fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise. Make us wise in sharing the gospel this fall, patient with questions, and quick to pray for the names You put on our hearts.

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.

    Proverbs 11:30 (BSB)

Grandparents and the generations

  1. 18Old and gray, still proclaiming

O God, do not forsake our older saints when they are old and gray, until they proclaim Your power to the next generation. Thank You for grandparents who pray. Give them health, purpose and chances to tell their grandchildren what You have done.

Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, until I proclaim Your power to the next generation, Your might to all who are to come.

    Psalm 71:18 (BSB)
  2. 19Grandchildren, the crown of the aged

LORD, grandchildren are the crown of the aged. On Grandparents Day we thank You for the bond between generations. Bless grandparents raising grandchildren, grandparents who live far away, and those praying for grandchildren who have wandered.

Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of a son is his father.

    Proverbs 17:6 (BSB)
  3. 20Written for the generation to come

LORD, let the stories of Your faithfulness be written down for the generation to come, so that people not yet born will praise You. Help our families record and retell what You have done, so that it is never forgotten.

Let this be written for the generation to come, so that a people not yet created may praise the LORD.

    Psalm 102:18 (BSB)

A closing prayer

Lord, as fall begins, we give You our work, our ministries and our schools. Make us honest and diligent in our jobs, and provide for those who are looking for work. Bless our small groups and every volunteer who serves. Give students courage to pray and live for You. Make us faithful sowers of the gospel, and let our grandparents’ faith take root in our children. We are Your workmanship; lead us into the good works You prepared for us. Amen.

It began in 1990 with students in Texas and has spread to campuses across the country and beyond.
