A Prayer for a Job

Proverbs 16:3

Proverbs 16:3 is one of the proverbs of Solomon, a short saying that tells the reader to commit his works to the LORD, set among sayings about how human plans and God’s purposes fit together.

Lord, I need work, and You know it better than I do. I commit this search to You: every application, every phone call, every interview. Open the right door and close the wrong ones. Keep me from discouragement on the days I hear nothing. Provide for my needs while I wait, and help me trust that my plans are safe in Your hands. Amen.

About this verse

Proverbs 16 opens with a run of sayings about plans. “The plans of the heart belong to man, but the reply of the tongue is from the LORD.” Our motives are weighed by Him, and later in the chapter, “A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.” In the middle stands this verse: “Commit your works to the LORD and your plans will be achieved.” It does not say every plan gets a yes. It says that work handed over to God is in good hands, and that He is the one who brings plans to their end. That is a steadying thought during a job search, when so much is outside your control: who reads the résumé, who calls back, and when. You do the work in front of you, and you commit it to Him. This prayer is for anyone looking for work, whether after a layoff, after school or after a long time away.
