Healing

The Whole Town at the Door

Mark 1:32-34

Mark tells how, on the evening of a Sabbath in Capernaum, the whole town brought its sick and demon-possessed to the door of Simon and Andrew's house, and Jesus healed many of them (Mark 1:32-34).

Lord Jesus, at the end of this day I bring You the ones I love and the things I cannot fix. You did not turn anyone away from Your door, so I come to You too. Heal what only You can heal, and quiet every voice that is not Yours. Amen.

The Scripture

“That evening, after sunset, people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed, and the whole town gathered at the door. And He healed many who were ill with various diseases and drove out many demons. But He would not allow the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.”

— Mark 1:32-34

Prayer points from Mark 1:32-34

  1. Bring Jesus the names of the people you love who are sick or suffering tonight, one by one.
  2. Thank Him that no one who came to that door was turned away, and come to Him with the same confidence.
  3. Ask Him to heal what only He can heal, and to give you trust in His timing and His way.
  4. Name whatever torments your mind or your home, and ask Jesus, who has authority over every dark power, to silence it.
  5. Ask for strength for those who are carrying a sick family member to Him, as the town carried theirs.
  6. Lay down the burdens of your day at His door before you sleep.

About this verse

This is still the same day in Capernaum. That morning Jesus had taught in the synagogue and set a man free from an unclean spirit, then gone to the home of Simon and Andrew and lifted Simon's mother-in-law from her fever. The day was a Sabbath, and a Sabbath ended at sunset. So as soon as the sun went down, people began bringing everyone who was sick or tormented, until the whole town was gathered at the door of that one house. Mark does not say Jesus healed every person; he says He healed many, with many kinds of illness, and drove out many demons. He also would not let the demons speak, because they knew who He was. Earlier that day one had already shouted out His identity in the synagogue; Jesus would not take His name on their lips. This is a prayer for the end of a long day, when you bring Him the people you love and the things you cannot fix.
