Stretch Out Your Hand

Mark 3:3-5

Mark 3:5 says: “Jesus looked around at them with anger and sorrow at their hardness of heart. Then He said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ So he stretched it out, and it was restored.” It happened in a synagogue on the Sabbath.

Lord Jesus, You called the man with the withered hand to stand up where everyone could see, and You made him whole. I hold out to You the part of my life that feels withered, the part I cannot fix. Restore it, Lord, and keep my heart soft toward You and toward others. Amen.

The Scripture

“Then Jesus said to the man with the withered hand, “Stand up among us.” And He asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?” But they were silent. Jesus looked around at them with anger and sorrow at their hardness of heart. Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out, and it was restored.”

— Mark 3:3-5

Prayer points from Mark 3:3-5

  1. Name before God the part of your life that feels withered.
  2. Thank Jesus that He calls you forward instead of hiding you.
  3. Hold it out to Him, as the man held out his hand.
  4. Ask Him to restore what you cannot fix on your own.
  5. Ask Him to keep your heart soft, not hard.
  6. Ask for courage to do good, even when others stay silent.

About this verse

Mark 3 opens with Jesus going into a synagogue on the Sabbath. A man with a withered hand was there, and some of the people were watching Jesus closely to see if He would heal on the Sabbath, so they could accuse Him. Jesus told the man, “Stand up among us,” and asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?” But they were silent. Jesus looked around at them with anger and sorrow at their hardness of heart. Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand,” and when he stretched it out, it was restored. Right after this, some of them began to plot against Jesus. It is a prayer for anyone holding out something broken to God, and for anyone who wants a softer heart.
