A Prayer for a Job Interview

Exodus 4:12

Exodus 4:12 is what the LORD said to Moses at the burning bush, after Moses protested that he had never been eloquent and was slow of speech, and God promised to help him speak.

Lord, You made my mouth, and You know I am nervous. As You told Moses, help me as I speak and teach me what to say. Calm my heart before I walk in. Help me listen well, answer honestly and show who I really am. Give me favor with the people I meet. And if this is not the right job, give me peace and lead me to the one that is. Amen.

The Scripture

“Now go! I will help you as you speak, and I will teach you what to say.””

— Exodus 4:12

Prayer points from Exodus 4:12

  1. Tell God honestly what makes you nervous.
  2. Ask Him to help you as you speak and teach you what to say.
  3. Pray for calm, a clear mind and good listening.
  4. Pray for the people interviewing you.
  5. Ask for honesty: to show who you really are, not a performance.
  6. Leave the outcome with Him and ask for peace either way.

About this verse

When God called Moses from the burning bush to go to Pharaoh, Moses raised one objection after another. One was about his voice: “I have never been eloquent,” he said, “I am slow of speech and tongue.” God answered with a question, “Who gave man his mouth?” and then with a promise: “Now go! I will help you as you speak, and I will teach you what to say.” Moses’ calling was unique, and a job interview is a much smaller thing. But the fear is familiar: the dry mouth, the blank mind, the worry that the right words won’t come. The God who answered Moses is the One who made every mouth. This prayer is for anyone getting ready for a job interview, asking for calm, clarity and honest words, and leaving the outcome with Him.
