When Money Is Tight

Philippians 4:19

Philippians 4:19 is a promise the apostle Paul wrote from prison to the church at Philippi, thanking them for the gifts they had sent him through Epaphroditus.

Father, You know what is in my bank account and what is due this month. I bring You my needs, not just my fears. Supply what I truly need from Your glorious riches in Christ Jesus, and give me wisdom with what I have. Teach me, like Paul, to be content in plenty and in need. And make me as generous with others as You are with me. Amen.

About this verse

Paul wrote this letter while he was “in chains for Christ.” The believers at Philippi had supported him again and again, and he tells them that with their latest gifts he has all he needs and more. Verse 19 is his answer to their generosity: the God who met Paul’s needs through them would meet theirs. Just before this, Paul says he has learned to be content “regardless of my circumstances,” whether he has plenty or is in need. So this is not a promise of wealth, or of everything we want. It is a promise about needs, met from God’s riches in Christ by a Father who sees what we lack. It sits well beside honest work, careful budgeting and asking for help. This prayer is for anyone lying awake over bills, a lost job or a shrinking paycheck, who wants to bring that worry to God.
