Do Not Be Afraid; Just Believe

Mark 5:35-36

Mark 5:35-36 is the moment the worst news reaches Jairus on the road: “Your daughter is dead; why bother the Teacher anymore?” But Jesus overheard their conversation and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe.”

Lord Jesus, when the news is hard and people say it is too late, let me hear Your voice above theirs. Speak to me as You did to Jairus: “Do not be afraid; just believe.” I give You my fear and trust You. Amen.

Mark 5:35-36 is the moment the worst news reaches Jairus on the road: “Your daughter is dead; why bother the Teacher anymore?” But Jesus overheard their conversation and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe.”

The Scripture

“While He was still speaking, messengers from the house of Jairus arrived and said, “Your daughter is dead; why bother the Teacher anymore?” But Jesus overheard their conversation and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe.””

Prayer points from Mark 5:35-36

  1. Bring Him the news you have just heard, exactly as it came.
  2. Ask Him to let His voice be louder than the voices saying it is too late.
  3. Give Him your fear by name.
  4. Choose to trust Him with the outcome, even before you see it.
  5. Pray for someone who is waiting on news today.
  6. Thank Him that He speaks to you first, before the fear takes hold.

About this verse

In Mark 5, Jairus, a synagogue leader, falls at Jesus’ feet and pleads with Him to come and lay His hands on his little daughter, who is at the point of death. Jesus goes with him, and a large crowd follows. On the way Jesus stops for a woman who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years, and while He is still speaking to her, messengers arrive from Jairus’ house. They say the girl has died and there is no reason to trouble the Teacher anymore. Jesus overhears them and speaks to Jairus before anyone else can: do not be afraid; just believe. He then goes on to the house, where He takes the girl by the hand and raises her. It is a prayer for anyone who has just heard hard news, or who is being told by others that it is too late.
