Anxiety & Fear

The LORD Will Fight for You

Exodus 14:14

Exodus 14:14 is what Moses told the Israelites at the edge of the Red Sea, as Pharaoh’s army closed in behind them.

Lord, I am standing at the edge of the sea with trouble right behind me. I am afraid, and I want to fix everything myself. You will fight for me; help me be still. Quiet my racing thoughts and my restless hands. Let me see Your salvation today. And when it is time to move, give me the courage to go forward. Amen.

About this verse

The Israelites had just left Egypt when Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds and chased them with chariots. Trapped between the army and the sea, the people were terrified and told Moses it would have been better to stay slaves. Moses answered, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the LORD’s salvation,” and then: “The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Being still here does not mean doing nothing forever. In the next verse God tells Moses to have the people go forward, and all that night He drove back the sea and made a dry path through it. Being still means stopping the panic and trusting God to do what we cannot. This prayer is for anyone who feels trapped, anxious or outnumbered, and worn out from fighting alone.
