In John 10, Jesus describes himself using the everyday language of Judean sheep-herding, where flocks were kept overnight in a walled enclosure with a single opening. Often the shepherd himself would lie down across that gap, becoming the literal door — no sheep could get in or out except over him. When Jesus says 'I am the door,' he is claiming to be that single point of safety and access: through him a sheep is saved, and also free to go in and out and find pasture, meaning both protection and provision, not just confinement. It corrects a real fear of his listeners — that access to God required going through corrupt religious gatekeepers. This is a prayer for feeling shut out, lost, or unsure how to find your way back to God.
