Peace & Rest

He Stands Between You and the Sun

Psalm 121:5-6

Lord, when the heat of this day is more than I can carry, thank You that You step in close and stand between me and everything that beats down on me. Be my shade, my keeper, my cool and kindest light. I stop striving now, and I rest under You. Amen.

The Scripture

“The LORD is your shade on your right hand; the sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.”

— Psalm 121:5-6

About this verse

Psalm 121 is one of the 'songs of ascents,' sung by pilgrims climbing the exposed, sun-scorched roads toward Jerusalem for the great feasts. Travelers on that route faced real heatstroke by day and cold, disorienting nights — 'the sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night' names actual dangers of the journey, not just metaphors. The psalm answers the traveler's opening question, 'where does my help come from,' by describing a keeper who never sleeps, never slumbers, and stands close enough to shade the very ground you walk. This prayer is for the seasons that feel relentless and exposed — no shelter in sight — when what you need most is to stop pushing forward on your own strength and let God stand between you and the heat.
